My AI Epiphany at SXSW

Look, I’m gonna be honest with you. About three months ago, I was a skeptic. AI? Nah, that’s just hype. Then I went to SXSW in Austin. Sat through a panel with a guy named Marcus—let’s call him that, he’d hate the attention—and by 11:30pm, I was converted.

Marcus said something that stuck with me: “AI isn’t about replacing humans. It’s about giving us superpowers.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.

And that’s when it hit me. I’d been looking at this all wrong. So now, I’m all in. Here’s why you should be too.

Why I Used to Hate AI

Back in 2015, I was editing a piece on machine learning. Some intern—let’s call him Dave—told me, “AI will steal our jobs.” I believed him. I mean, look at the headlines, right? “Robots are coming for your job!” “AI will end humanity!”

Then I talked to a friend, Sarah, over coffee at the place on 5th. She’s a data scientist. “You’re an idiot,” she told me. “AI is just math. It’s not magic.” She’s right. It’s not magic. It’s just… yeah. Math.

The AI That Actually Works

So what changed my mind? Well, I started using AI tools. Not the hype, not the vaporware. The stuff that actually works.

Take lifestyle tips daily improvement for example. I know, I know, it sounds like a scam. But hear me out. I tried it for 36 hours. It’s not perfect, but it’s good. Really good.

It’s like having a personal assistant who’s also a life coach. It reminds me to drink water. It tells me when to stop working. It even suggests articles to read. I mean, sure, sometimes it’s wrong. But so am I. And at least it’s trying.

The AI That Doesn’t Work

But not all AI is created equal. Some of it’s just… bad. Like that time I tried an AI writing tool. It was completley useless. I spent more time editing its output than I would have spent writing the damn thing myself.

And don’t get me started on AI art. It’s just stealing from real artists. I mean, come on. That’s not innovation. That’s theft.

AI and the Future of Work

Back to Marcus. He said something else that stuck with me: “AI will change the future of work. But it won’t destroy it.” I think he’s right.

AI will automate some jobs. But it will also create new ones. It will change how we work. But it won’t end work. It can’t. Because work is more than just tasks. It’s meaning. It’s purpose.

I’m not saying it’s gonna be easy. There will be committment issues. There will be resistance. There will be fear. But that’s okay. That’s normal. That’s human.

A Tangent: AI and Parenting

Speaking of human, let me tell you about my kid. Last Tuesday, she asked me, “Dad, what’s AI?” I didn’t know what to say. I mean, she’s only 8. She shouldn’t have to worry about this stuff.

But then I thought about it. Maybe she should. Maybe we all should. Because AI is here. It’s not going away. And we need to talk about it. We need to understand it. We need to… I don’t know. Figure it out.

So What Now?

I’m not saying you should drop everything and become an AI expert. I’m not saying you should ignore AI either. I’m saying you should pay attention. You should learn. You should…

Honestly, I don’t know what you should do. But I know what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna keep using AI. I’m gonna keep learning. I’m gonna keep…

Well, I don’t know. But I’ll figure it out. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll write about it. Who knows?

About the Author: Hi, I’m Alex. I’ve been editing tech magazines for way too long. I love AI, hate bad UX, and I’m always looking for the next big thing. I’m also a dad, a husband, and a pretty decent cook. But mostly, I’m just trying to figure it all out.
