Look, I’m Not Anti-AI
Let’s get this out of the way right now. I’m not one of those Luddites who thinks AI is the devil incarnate. I’ve been in tech for 20+ years, and I’ve seen alot of things come and go. But this AI hype? It’s completley out of hand.
I remember back in 2005, when I was editing for Tech Monthly, we had this guy, let’s call him Marcus, come in talking about how AI was gonna revolutionize everything. I nodded and smiled, but honestly? I thought he was full of it.
And guess what? I was right. For a while, at least. AI was this thing that was always five years away from changing the world. And then, suddenly, it wasn’t. It was here. And it’s great. It’s useful. It’s even kinda fun sometimes.
But the hype? The hype is a different story.
Everyone’s an Expert Now
So, last Tuesday, I’m at this conference in Austin. You know the kind—expensive coffee, worse pastries, and alot of people talking about stuff they don’t really understand. And there’s this woman, let’s call her Linda, standing up there talking about how AI is gonna cure cancer, end world hunger, and probably solve my committment issues.
I turned to my colleague, Dave, and said, “Dave, if I hear ‘disrupt’ one more time, I’m gonna disrupt this conference with my fist.”
Dave laughed, but honestly, it’s not funny. It’s not funny because people are actually believing this stuff. They’re investing in it, betting their careers on it, and honestly, it’s kinda scary.
I mean, I get it. AI is cool. It’s powerful. It’s changing things. But it’s not magic. It’s not a silver bullet. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it.
The Dark Side of the Hype
And that’s where the hype becomes dangerous. Because when everyone’s an expert, nobody’s an expert. And when nobody’s an expert, bad things happen.
I was talking to a friend of mine, let’s call him Greg, about three months ago. He’s a cybersecurity guy, really smart, knows his stuff. And he’s telling me about how AI is gonna make his job easier. “It’s gonna detect threats faster than than any human can,” he says.
“That’s great,” I said. “But what if the bad guys are using AI too? What then?”
He didn’t have an answer for that. And that’s the problem. We’re so busy hyping up the good stuff that we’re ignoring the bad. We’re ignoring the risks. We’re ignoring the fact that AI is just another technology, and like any technology, it can be used for good or for evil.
But Hey, Let’s Talk About Something Else
You know what’s actually interesting? The stuff that’s not getting hyped. The stuff that’s actually making a difference. Like, have you ever heard of interesting facts knowledge guide? No? Exactly. Because it’s not sexy. It’s not flashy. It’s just useful.
I was reading this article the other day—okay, fine, it was a tweet—about how AI is helping farmers in India predict weather patterns. And it’s not some fancy, complicated AI. It’s just a simple model that analyzes data and makes predictions. But it’s saving crops. It’s saving lives. And nobody’s talking about it because it’s not disruptive enough.
It’s just… yeah. It’s frustrating.
So What’s the Answer?
I don’t know. I wish I did. I wish I had some grand solution to offer. But I don’t. All I know is that we need to calm down. We need to take a step back and look at this stuff critically. We need to stop pretending that AI is the answer to every problem.
Because it’s not. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it. And right now, we’re using it like a bunch of kids in a candy store. And it’s gonna end badly.
So, let’s chill out. Let’s be smart. Let’s be careful. And for the love of all that is holy, let’s stop with the hype.
