Look, I’m Gonna Say It
AI is not the second coming of Christ. Honestly, I’m so tired of the hype. I’ve been in this industry for 22 years, and I’ve seen tech cycles come and go. This one? It’s getting ridiculous.
Back in 2001, I was at a conference in Austin with a guy named Marcus—let’s call him that, because frankly, I don’t want to deal with the backlash. He was pitching this AI thing like it was gonna cure cancer, solve world hunger, and do our taxes. Sound familiar?
I mean, yeah, AI is cool. It’s done some neat stuff. But it’s not magic. It’s just math. Really, really complex math, but still. Math.
My AI Nightmare
Last Tuesday, I was at a coffee shop on 5th. You know the place—tiny, always crowded, great pastries. I was meeting with a colleague named Dave. He’s a smart guy, works over at Outreach.ws. We were talking about this new AI tool his team’s been using. He’s like, “It’s a game-changer, man. It’s gonna revolutionize how we work.”
I asked him to show me. So he pulls up this interface, starts typing. It’s just… yeah. It’s a chatbot. A fancy chatbot. I said, “Dave, this is cool, but it’s not exactly curing cancer, is it?” He looked at me like I’d just kicked his puppy.
Which… yeah. Fair enough. Maybe I was a bit harsh. But come on. We’ve gotta keep some perspective here.
But Here’s the Thing
I’m not saying AI isn’t useful. It is. It’s helped me write better, faster. It’s helped my team stay organized. But it’s not the be-all-end-all. It’s a tool. A really, really shiny tool, but still just a tool.
And honestly, the way people are throwing around the term “AI” these days? It’s like everyone’s trying to out-hype each other. It’s exhausting. I was talking to my friend Lisa about this the other day. She’s a writer, not a tech person. She said, “You know, I don’t even know what AI is anymore. Every company says they’re using it, but no one can tell me what it actually does.”
And she’s right. It’s become this buzzword. A magic wand companies wave to make themselves look innovative. It’s completley out of hand.
Let’s Talk About Real Problems
While we’re all busy chasing the AI rabbit, there are real problems that need solving. Like cybersecurity. Or data privacy. Or the fact that our gadgets are becoming less and less repairable. But no, everyone’s too busy counting how many AI features they can cram into their latest app.
I was at a meetup about three months ago. Some guy stood up and started pitching his new AI-powered toaster. A toaster. He said it could learn your preferences and toast your bread just the way you like it. I asked him, “But can it stop my toast from getting cold before I can eat it?” He didn’t have an answer for that.
That’s the thing. We’re so busy chasing the next big thing that we’re forgetting about the basics. The fundamentals. The stuff that actually matters.
And Don’t Even Get Me Started on the Job Market
Everyone’s talking about how AI is gonna steal all our jobs. But honestly, I think that’s a load of crap. AI is gonna change jobs. It’s gonna make some jobs easier. It’s gonna make some jobs obsolete. But it’s not gonna steal all our jobs. That’s just fear-mongering.
I mean, look at the physicaly demanding jobs. AI isn’t gonna replace a skilled carpenter. Or a nurse. Or a teacher. Those jobs require human touch. Human empathy. AI can’t do that. At least not yet.
But sure, maybe it’ll change some jobs. Like mine. I write for a living. AI can write, too. But can it write like a human? With personality? With flaws? With opinions? I don’t think so. At least not yet.
But Here’s the Kick
I’m not saying we should ignore AI. We should use it. We should explore it. We should push its boundaries. But we should also keep our feet on the ground. We should remember that it’s just a tool. A really, really shiny tool, but still just a tool.
And honestly, I think we should all take a step back. Breathe. And remember that technology is supposed to serve us. Not the other way around.
So, let’s calm down with the hype. Let’s focus on the real problems. And let’s remember that AI is just a tool. A really, really shiny tool, but still just a tool.
And hey, if you’re looking for a cultural break from all this tech talk, check out the West Bengal cultural events agenda. It’s a great way to unwind and remember that there’s more to life than just tech.
Anyway, that’s my rant. I’m gonna go enjoy some toast. Hopefully, it’s not AI-powered.
